Basketball

Basketball is a fast-paced team sport played on a rectangular court, typically indoors, where two teams, each consisting of five players, compete to score points by shooting a ball through the opposing team’s hoop, which is elevated 10 feet above the ground. The game is played with a round ball, and points can be scored in various ways, including field goals (two or three points depending on the distance from the hoop) and free throws (one point each).

Players advance the ball by dribbling (bouncing the ball while running) or passing it to teammates. The primary objective is to outscore the opponent within a stipulated time, typically divided into quarters or halves. Basketball promotes physical fitness, teamwork, and strategic thinking, making it a popular recreational and competitive activity worldwide. The sport originated in the United States in the late 19th century and has since grown into a significant professional and collegiate endeavor, with major leagues like the NBA (National Basketball Association) becoming globally recognized.
